Sizes are based on the width of the foot. Example: My 8-year-old with a wider foot wears a Large. Online it says that Larges fit size 8.5-12 shoe. My daughter wears a size 2, so according to that should be in a size Small, but she's for sure a Large. However, this does not mean your 8-year-old will be a Large.
